Lugano Walks

Ruvigliana to Lugano

Leaving the flat, head downhill and cut through the small park with benches and a central fountain—an easy, pleasant way to ease into the walk. From here, follow Via Fontana for a short stretch until you reach a set of steps leading down through palm trees. At the bottom, across the road, you’ll find the entrance to Parco San Michele, one of the best viewpoints in Lugano.

Take your time exploring the park. There are plenty of shaded benches, making it an ideal spot for a short rest. For the highlight, follow the path uphill to the small chapel. From here, you’ll get panoramic views over Lugano, the lake, and Monte San Salvatore—perfect for photos, especially in the morning or late afternoon light.

When you’re ready to continue, descend on the opposite side of the park. Follow the clearly marked walking trails (look for yellow signposts), which guide you through Lugano’s quieter residential streets. Along the way, you’ll find multiple scenic points where the views open up over the lake and surrounding mountains—don’t rush, as these are some of the most rewarding parts of the walk.

Be aware that this route involves quite a few steps and cobbled or uneven paths, so it’s best suited for comfortable walking shoes rather than strollers. That said, the route is well-equipped with frequent benches and public drinking water fountains, so you can take breaks as needed.

Overall, this is a relaxed, scenic walking route that combines nature, viewpoints, and local charm—ideal for a half-day exploration of Lugano beyond the main tourist areas.
